The Jouanolou-Thomason homotopy lemma

چکیده
The goal of this note is to prove what is now known as the Jouanolou-Thomason homotopy lemma or simply “Jouanolou’s trick.” Our main reason for discussing this here is that i) most statements (that I have seen) assume unncessary quasi-projectivity hypotheses, and ii) most applications of the result that I know (e.g., in homotopy K-theory) appeal to the result as merely a “black box,” while the proof indicates that the construction is quite geometric and relatively explicit. For simplicity, throughout the word scheme means separated Noetherian scheme.

Grothendieck fibrations and classifying spaces
Grothendieck fibrations have played an important role in homotopy theory. Among others, theywereused byThomason to describehomotopy colimits of small categories and byQuillen to derive long exact sequences of higher K-theory groups. We construct simplicial objects, namely the fibred and the cleaved nerve, to characterize the homotopy type of a Grothendieck fibration by using the additional stru...
متن کاملHomotopy Fibre Sequences Induced by 2-functors
This paper contains some contributions to the study of the relationship between 2-categories and the homotopy types of their classifying spaces. Mainly, generalizations are given of both Quillen’s Theorem B and Thomason’s Homotopy Colimit Theorem to 2-functors. Mathematical Subject Classification: 18D05, 55P15, 18F25.
متن کاملHypergraph regularity and quasi-randomness
Thomason and Chung, Graham, and Wilson were the first to systematically study quasi-random graphs and hypergraphs, and proved that several properties of random graphs imply each other in a deterministic sense. Their concepts of quasi-randomness match the notion of ε-regularity from the earlier Szemerédi regularity lemma. In contrast, there exists no “natural” hypergraph regularity lemma matchin...
متن کاملGeneralised sheaf cohomology theories
This paper is an expanded version of notes for a set of lectures given at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences during a NATO ASI Workshop entitled “Homotopy Theory of Geometric Categories” on September 23 and 24, 2002. This workshop was part of a program entitled New Contexts in Stable Homotopy Theory that was held at the Institute during the fall of 2002. The intent for the lec...
متن کاملSheaves and Homotopy Theory
The purpose of this note is to describe the homotopy-theoretic version of sheaf theory developed in the work of Thomason [14] and Jardine [7, 8, 9]; a few enhancements are provided here and there, but the bulk of the material should be credited to them. Their work is the foundation from which Morel and Voevodsky build their homotopy theory for schemes [12], and it is our hope that this expositi...
